In the soul of the protagonist of the story "I am (romance)" is a struggle between good and evil, humanism and bigotry. He is a "Chekist, but also a man", a "rebellious son" who, after the most shameful crime against the dearest human - the mother, destroys the remnants of humanity in himself and dies morally.
